What does it mean to be holistic?
The term "holistic" emphasizes the importance of the whole person and the interdependence of its parts, and is concerned with wholes rather than analysis or separation into parts. For example, a machine is composed of many intricate parts. If one of the parts is broken or not working optimally, it affects the functionality and performance of the entire machine.
Humans are multi-dimensional and complex beings. The field of Recreation Therapy addresses all domains of well-being by helping persons to transcend from simply surviving to thriving. The six domains of well being are Physical, Social, Affective, Cognitive, Vocational, and Spiritual. In a nutshell, Recreation Therapy is the use of activity-based therapeutic interventions to treat and reduce the symptoms and associated limitations of chronic diseases. These symptoms may include physical disability, social isolation, depression, and the inability to think and function safely. We treat the whole person, and believe that the first step on the road to wellness is good nutrition and meal planning.
